About Advanced Variable Geo

Advanced Variable Geo is a 2D arcade-style fighting game, developed and published by TGL, which arrived on the PlayStation console in the late 1990s. This version is a direct port of the arcade original and a continuation of the Variable Geo series, known for its roster of exclusively female fighters. The PlayStation release of Advanced Variable Geo features various modes, including a robust Story Mode that includes visual novel elements and voice-acted sequences to develop the narrative surrounding the 'Variable Geo' fighting tournament.

The core gameplay in Advanced Variable Geo is rooted in classic 2D fighting mechanics. Taking control of characters like Jun or Yuka, you engage in close-quarters battles where managing your character’s distance and momentum is crucial. For example, playing as Manami means focusing on overwhelming your opponent with fast, multi-hit techniques, while selecting Ayako requires a more patient approach, utilizing charge-input special moves to punish mistakes. The controls allow for standing, crouching, and jumping attacks, which you chain together into custom combos. Successfully executing specific directional commands combined with button presses unleashes powerful signature moves, such as projectiles or cinematic assaults.

A key element of Advanced Variable Geo is the tactical use of the meter at the bottom of the screen. As you successfully land or take hits, this meter fills up, and when fully charged, it allows you to perform highly damaging Super Attacks. Timing these supers is crucial—you might save the meter to punish an opponent’s failed attack, or use it to quickly finish a round when your opponent’s health is low. The action is fast and requires quick reflexes; you must learn to read your rival's movements and immediately respond with the appropriate block or counter-attack. Failing to block a series of attacks means rapidly losing your health bar.

The PlayStation version of Advanced Variable Geo preserves the colorful, anime-inspired presentation of the arcade game. It utilizes the CD format for high-quality audio, including a distinct rock soundtrack and full voiceovers during the Story Mode cutscenes. While the mechanics are straightforward for fighting game enthusiasts, mastering the advanced combos and supers for each of the diverse characters is what keeps the gameplay demanding in Advanced Variable Geo.
