About FINAL FANTASY VIII
FINAL FANTASY VIII is a role-playing game released in the late 1990s for the PlayStation.
You play as Squall Leonhart, a student at Balamb Garden, a military academy that trains elite mercenaries called SeeDs. The narrative centers on Squall and his companions as they become entangled in a global conflict against the Galbadian Empire and a formidable sorceress. Gameplay involves exploring diverse environments, completing missions, and engaging in turn-based combat.
Combat in FINAL FANTASY VIII is distinct due to its Junction system. Instead of traditional MP, you draw magic spells from enemies or specific points on the world map. These spells are then 'Junctioned' to your character's stats, such as HP, Strength, or Defense, directly boosting them. The spells themselves are not consumed for casting in battle; rather, they are used to enhance your character's attributes. This mechanic fundamentally changes how you approach character development and combat preparation.
Accompanying your party are Guardian Forces (GFs), summoned creatures that aid in battle and provide passive abilities. As your GFs gain experience, they learn new skills, including the crucial Junction ability, and unlock more slots for equipping spells, further deepening customization. The game also features an optional but deep card game, Triple Triad, which can yield valuable rewards and magic.
